  • Yield: 4 servings
  • Diet: Optional vegetarian

Description

A delicious twist on classic sloppy joes featuring Dr. Pepper for a unique sweet and tangy flavor.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey or chicken)
  • 1 small onion, finely diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (smoky or sweet)
  • 1/2 cup Dr. Pepper (regular, diet, or zero sugar)
  • 1 tbsp tomato paste
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 brioche buns or hamburger buns
  • Optional: Sliced pickles or jalapeños, shredded cheese, toasted bun with garlic butter, caramelized onions or sautéed bell peppers, fried egg

Instructions

  1. Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add a splash of oil, then sauté onions for 3 minutes until translucent. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
  2. Add ground beef. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until fully browned. Drain any excess grease.
  3. Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and barbecue sauce. Let it cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
  4. Pour in Dr. Pepper and stir. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
  5. Lightly butter and toast the buns on a skillet or under the broiler for about 5 minutes.
  6. Scoop the sloppy joe mix onto each bun and add toppings of choice.

Notes

Feel free to customize with your favorite toppings. For a healthier version, consider using ground turkey or a vegetarian substitute.
