Description
A delicious twist on classic sloppy joes featuring Dr. Pepper for a unique sweet and tangy flavor.
Ingredients
- 1 lb ground beef (or ground turkey or chicken)
- 1 small onion, finely diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1/2 cup barbecue sauce (smoky or sweet)
- 1/2 cup Dr. Pepper (regular, diet, or zero sugar)
- 1 tbsp tomato paste
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 4 brioche buns or hamburger buns
- Optional: Sliced pickles or jalapeños, shredded cheese, toasted bun with garlic butter, caramelized onions or sautéed bell peppers, fried egg
Instructions
- Heat a skillet over medium heat. Add a splash of oil, then sauté onions for 3 minutes until translucent. Add garlic and cook for another minute.
- Add ground beef. Break it apart with a spatula and cook until fully browned. Drain any excess grease.
- Stir in tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, and barbecue sauce. Let it cook for 1–2 minutes until fragrant.
- Pour in Dr. Pepper and stir. Reduce heat and let it simmer for 10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the sauce thickens.
- Lightly butter and toast the buns on a skillet or under the broiler for about 5 minutes.
- Scoop the sloppy joe mix onto each bun and add toppings of choice.
Notes
Feel free to customize with your favorite toppings. For a healthier version, consider using ground turkey or a vegetarian substitute.
