Description

Delicious apple bars made with a buttery crust, spiced apple filling, and crunchy crumble topping, perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for the crust)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for the crust)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold, cut into cubes, for the crust)
  • 3 cups peeled and thinly sliced apples (Granny Smith recommended)
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar (for the filling)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (for the filling)
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for the filling)
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg (for the filling)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice (for the filling)
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour (for the topping)
  • 1/2 cup oats (for the topping)
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar (for the topping)
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon (for the topping)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (cold, cut into cubes, for the topping)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×9-inch baking pan.
  2. Prepare the crust: In a medium bowl, mix the flour and sugar. Cut in the butter until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Press the mixture into the baking pan and bake for 10-12 minutes, until lightly golden.
  3. Make the apple filling: In a large bowl, toss the apple slices with sugars, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Spread the apple mixture evenly over the baked crust.
  4. Prepare the topping: In another bowl, mix flour, oats, brown sugar, and cinnamon. Cut in the butter until the mixture is crumbly. Sprinkle the topping over the apples.
  5. Bake the bars: Bake for 35-40 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender. Allow the bars to cool completely before cutting them into squares.

Notes

Choose firm apples like Granny Smith or Honeycrisp for best results. Let the bars cool completely before cutting to avoid crumbling.
