Description
This chicken shawarma is marinated in yogurt and spices, served with a creamy garlic sauce for a quick and flavorful meal.
Ingredients
- 1 1/2 pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs (or breasts), sliced thin
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 tablespoons lemon juice
- 1 teaspoon ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon ground coriander
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- 3 garlic cloves, minced (for marinade)
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1/2 cup mayonnaise
- 1/2 cup plain yogurt or sour cream
- 4 garlic cloves, minced or crushed
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- Water to thin as needed
- Pita bread or flatbreads (optional)
- Sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, pickles (optional)
- Fresh parsley (optional)
Instructions
- In a bowl, mix yogurt, olive oil, lemon juice, cumin, coriander, paprika, turmeric, cinnamon, minced garlic, salt, and pepper.
- Add sliced chicken to the marinade. Toss to coat. Cover and refrigerate at least 1 hour, or overnight for best flavor.
- Make the garlic sauce: combine mayonnaise, yogurt, crushed garlic, lemon juice, and salt. Add a little water if the sauce is too thick. Chill until ready to serve.
- Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and add a little oil. Cook the marinated chicken slices in a single layer. Do not crowd the pan. Cook 4–6 minutes per side until browned and cooked through.
- Let the chicken rest 5 minutes, then slice thin if needed.
- Warm pita or flatbread if using.
- Place sliced chicken on warm pita or a plate. Spoon garlic sauce over the chicken. Add sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, and parsley. You can also make a bowl with rice or salad under the chicken.
Notes
Marinate longer for more flavor. Use thighs for juicier meat. Cook in batches to get good browning. If sauce is too strong, add more yogurt.
