A rustic, comforting loaf that is quick and easy to make using just a few pantry staples.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Mix until a dough forms.
- Knead the dough gently on a floured surface for about 1 minute.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cut a deep cross on top of the loaf.
- Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
- Cool slightly before slicing. Enjoy with butter!
Notes
Use fresh baking soda for best results. Store cooled bread in a clean tea towel for up to 3 days.
