A quick and easy classic Irish Soda Bread with a crisp crust and tender crumb, perfect for busy mornings and special dinners.
Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 3/4 cups buttermilk
- 2 tablespoons sugar (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- Mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar in a large bowl.
- Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
- Stir with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead just until it comes together, about 1 minute.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cut a deep cross on the top of the loaf.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until golden and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Let it cool slightly before slicing and enjoy fresh.
Notes
For best results, measure flour correctly and avoid over-kneading the dough.
