Description
A timeless American sandwich combining a juicy beef patty, caramelized onions, and melted Swiss cheese on crispy rye bread.
Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef (80/20)
- 4 slices rye bread
- 4 slices Swiss cheese
- 2 large yellow onions
- 2 tablespoons butter (for caramelizing onions)
- Butter (for grilling)
- Salt, to taste
- Pepper, to taste
- Optional seasonings (garlic powder, Worcestershire sauce, paprika)
Instructions
- Caramelize the onions: Slice the onions thinly, heat butter in a skillet, add onions with salt, and cook until golden brown (25-40 minutes).
- Cook the beef patties: Divide beef into four equal portions, shape into patties, season, and cook in a hot skillet for 3-4 minutes each side.
- Assemble the sandwiches: Butter one side of each slice of bread, layer cheese, patty, onions, more cheese, and top with another slice of bread.
- Grill the sandwiches: Cook on medium heat, pressing down until golden and cheese is melted (2-3 minutes each side).
- Serve: Slice the sandwiches and serve while hot with desired sides.
Notes
For variations, try swapping cheeses, adding jalapeños for spice, or using turkey for a lighter version.
