Ingredients

  • 1 pound ground beef (85/15 or 90/10)
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 3/4 teaspoon kosher salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • Pinch red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon sugar (optional)
  • 2/3 cup water or low sodium beef broth
  • 1 teaspoon tomato paste (optional for extra sauciness)

Instructions

  1. Heat a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground beef and break it into small crumbles, searing for 2-3 minutes.
  3. Continue cooking until no longer pink, about 6-7 minutes, and drain excess fat if needed.
  4. Sprinkle on about 2 tablespoons of the homemade seasoning.
  5. Pour in 2/3 cup water or broth and stir well.
  6. Let it simmer gently for 3-5 minutes until liquid reduces.
  7. Adjust seasoning and add tomato paste if desired.

Notes

For saucy meat, add 1 teaspoon cornstarch to the dry mix before cooking. Store extra seasoning in a jar for up to a couple of months.
