Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) and butter a baking dish.
- In a pot, melt the butter over medium heat. Whisk in the flour and cook for about 1 minute.
- Slowly whisk in the milk and cream until the mixture is smooth and slightly thicker.
- Add the minced garlic, salt, pepper, and half of the shredded cheese to the sauce, stirring until melted.
- Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the buttered baking dish. Pour half of the sauce over the potatoes. Repeat the layering with the remaining potatoes and sauce.
- Top with the remaining shredded cheese.
- Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes.
- Remove the foil and bake for an additional 20 to 30 minutes until the dish is bubbly and the potatoes are tender.
- Let rest for 10 to 15 minutes before serving to allow the sauce to set.
Notes
For prepping ahead, you can assemble the dish and refrigerate it for up to 24 hours or par-bake it before refrigerating.
