  • 1 lb Ground beef Can use ground turkey or chicken for a leaner option.
  • 4 pieces Chicken hamburger buns Toast just before serving for the best texture.
  • 1 large Onion, thinly sliced Cook slowly for caramelization.
  • 2 cloves Garlic, minced Adds flavor.
  • 1 cup Swiss cheese, shredded Can swap with Gruyere for a stronger taste.
Seasonings
  • 1 tsp Thyme, dried
  • 1 tsp Soy sauce Adds umami, can be omitted.
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • to taste Salt and pepper
  • 1 tbsp Olive oil For cooking the onions.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook until they are softened and caramelized, about 10-15 minutes.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute.
  4. Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spatula.
  5. Drain any excess fat.
Cooking
  1. Stir in thyme, soy sauce, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes to combine flavors.
  2. Toast the hamburger buns until golden brown.
Assembly
  1. Assemble the sloppy joes by placing the beef mixture on the bottom half of each bun, then sprinkle with shredded Swiss cheese.
  2. Place under a broiler for 1-2 minutes until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
Serving
  1. Serve hot on toasted buns. Offer pickles, chips, or a simple green salad on the side.

Notes

Allow the beef mix to cool to room temperature before storing in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days. Reheat on the stove over low heat or microwave until hot. For best texture, do not store the buns with the beef.
