Ingredients

Meatball Ingredients
  • 1 lb Ground beef
  • 2 cloves Garlic minced
  • 1 tsp Onion powder
  • 1 large Egg
  • 2 cups Breadcrumbs
  • 1 tsp Italian seasoning
Onion Sauce Ingredients
  • 2 large Onions sliced
  • 2 tbsp Butter
  • 2 tbsp Olive oil
  • 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tbsp All-purpose flour
  • 2 cups Beef broth
  • 1 tsp Sugar
  • 1/2 cup Gruyere or Swiss cheese for topping
  • 1/4 cup Grated Parmesan cheese for topping

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 400°F (200°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the ground beef, minced garlic, onion powder, chopped parsley, egg, breadcrumbs, Italian seasoning, salt, and pepper.
  3. Shape the mixture into meatballs and place them on a baking sheet.
Baking
  1. Bake the meatballs in the preheated oven for 20 minutes or until cooked through.
Onion Sauce
  1. In a large skillet, heat olive oil and butter over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onions and cook until caramelized, about 15-20 minutes, stirring frequently.
  3. Sprinkle the flour over the onions and stir for a minute, then slowly add the beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and sugar.
  4. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce to a simmer.
Final Assembly
  1. Add the cooked meatballs to the onion sauce and let it simmer for an additional 10 minutes.
  2. Serve the meatballs and sauce topped with Gruyere or Swiss cheese and grated Parmesan cheese.

Notes

Ensure the onions are well caramelized for the best flavor. Use fresh parsley for an added burst of freshness. Don't rush the baking of the meatballs; they should be cooked through but not dry. Experiment with different cheeses like mozzarella or cheddar for a twist.
