Ingredients

Dough Ingredients
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup warm water Add a splash more if needed
  • Oil for frying (vegetable, canola, or another neutral oil)
Optional Ingredients
  • Extra flour for hands For handling the dough
  • Paper towels For draining fried bread
  • Slotted spoon or tongs For removing bread from oil

Method

Make the Dough
  1. In a medium bowl, mix flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Pour in the warm water and stir until it starts to come together.
  3. Use your hands to bring it into a soft dough. It should feel tender and slightly tacky.
  4. Let the dough rest for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Heat the Oil
  1. Pour oil into a heavy pan, about 1 to 1 and a half inches deep.
  2. Heat it over medium to medium-high. Aim for 350 to 365 F.
Shape the Bread
  1. Divide the dough into 6 to 8 pieces.
  2. Lightly flour your hands and pat each piece into a circle, about 1/4 inch thick.
  3. Poke a small hole in the center of each piece.
Fry and Flip
  1. Lay one piece of dough into the hot oil and fry for about 45 seconds to 1 minute.
  2. Flip and fry the second side for another 45 seconds to 1 minute, until golden.
  3. Transfer to a paper towel lined plate and repeat with remaining dough.
  4. Serve warm.

Notes

Use warm water, not hot. Do not overwork the dough for best results. Fry one test piece first to check oil temperature. Serve with various toppings for sweet or savory preferences.
