Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Sifted for a lighter crumb if desired.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Use fresh for reliable rise.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar Optional, for balancing tang.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk For a richer flavor. Can substitute with milk + vinegar.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
  4. Stir with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms. Do not over-mix.
  5. Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute until it comes together.
  6. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  7. Cut a deep cross on the top of the loaf.
  8. Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the crust is golden and sounds hollow when tapped.
  9. Let it cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

Serve warm with butter, cheese, or jam. Store in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for 3 months.
