Preparation
- Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C).
- In a large bowl, mix the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar (if using).
- Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk.
- Stir with a wooden spoon until a soft dough forms. Do not over-mix.
- Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and knead gently for about 1 minute until it comes together.
- Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
- Cut a deep cross on the top of the loaf.
- Bake for 30–35 minutes or until the crust is golden and sounds hollow when tapped.
- Let it cool slightly before slicing.
Notes
Serve warm with butter, cheese, or jam. Store in the fridge for up to 3 days or freeze for 3 months.
