Ingredients
  

Dry Ingredients
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour Use plain all-purpose flour for a tender crumb.
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda Use fresh baking soda for best results.
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 tablespoon sugar Omit for lower sugar option.
Wet Ingredients
  • 1 3/4 cups buttermilk Use full-fat for best flavor; can substitute with plant-based milk mixed with lemon juice.

Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
  2. In a large bowl, mix together the flour, baking soda, salt, and sugar.
  3. Make a well in the center and pour in the buttermilk. Mix until a dough forms.
  4. Knead the dough gently on a floured surface for about 1 minute.
  5. Shape the dough into a round loaf and place it on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
  6. Cut a deep cross on top of the loaf.
Baking
  1. Bake for 30 minutes or until golden brown.
  2. Cool slightly before slicing.

Notes

To store, wrap cooled bread in a clean tea towel or paper bag for up to 3 days. Freeze tightly wrapped for up to 3 months. Best reheating practices include warming in a 350°F oven.
